Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: What You Need to Know

Master the fundamental criteria for evaluating diamond quality and making informed purchases.
When purchasing diamonds, understanding the 4Cs is essential for making an informed decision. These four characteristics determine a diamond's quality and value.
The cut refers to how well a diamond has been shaped and faceted. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, creating the sparkle we associate with diamonds. Popular cuts include round brilliant, princess, emerald, and oval.
Diamond color is graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The closer to colorless, the more valuable the diamond. Most engagement rings feature diamonds in the D-J range.
Clarity measures the absence of inclusions (internal flaws) and blemishes (external flaws). Grades range from FL (Flawless) to I3 (Included). Most diamonds have some inclusions, but many are invisible to the naked eye.
Carat refers to the diamond's weight, with one carat equal to 200 milligrams. Larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable, but the other three Cs significantly impact the overall value.
Remember, the best diamond balances all four characteristics within your budget to maximize beauty and value.
